9 Recent Fixes for FireStick Buffering Issues (2025)
Introduction
Is your FireStick device buffering while you’re binging? You're not alone, and it's easy to fix. In 2025, there are new ways to stop buffering and enjoy smooth streaming.
In this guide, we’ll share the 9 best fixes for FireStick buffering issues. These simple tips will help you watch movies and shows without interruptions.
Common Problems That Cause Buffering on FireStick :
There are 9 common reasons why your FireStick might keep buffering:
Slow internet connection: The most common reason for buffering is a slow internet connection. Your connection should be at least 12 Mbps for SD streaming.
Weak Wi-Fi signal: If there’s distance or interference between your FireStick and the router, it can weaken the Wi-Fi signal and cause buffering ( it depends on the environement ).
ISP throttling: Some internet providers intentionally slow down your connection during peak hours to balance network usage.( specially at tea time for british people )
Too many devices using the internet: If multiple people are downloading or streaming content at the same time, it can slow down your FireStick.
Outdated streaming apps: Buffering is more likely to happen on older versions of streaming apps.
Low RAM: If too many apps are running in the background, your FireStick’s RAM may be used up, causing videos to load slowly or not at all.( for firestick lite )
Low storage: FireStick models have only 8GB or 16GB of storage, and if it gets full, the device will slow down. ( install the apps that you need only, and delete the apk files once it(s installed
Overheating: If your FireStick gets too hot, it can slow down or stop working properly.
Outdated FireStick OS: An old version of the FireStick operating system can limit your device’s performance.
9 Quick Fixes to Solve Buffering on FireStick
Here are the solutions:
1-Restart Your FireStick :
A simple reboot can fix buffering issues. Restarting your device clears app caches, removes temporary files, and can fix minor bugs.
HOW TO DO IT :
Amazon Fire OS has a built-in restart option in the Settings menu. Follow these steps to reboot your FireStick:
Note: This method only works if your remote is working or the device isn’t frozen.
1-Click on Settings (the gear icon) on your Fire TV home screen.
2-Select My FireTv
3-On the My Fire TV menu window, click Restart.
4-When asked, click Restart again. Your FireStick will start restarting, and you’ll see the “Powering Off” message on the screen.
That’s how you restart using settings option
2-Use a VPN service
Many ISPs slow down your connection when they detect heavy streaming, which can cause buffering on your FireStick and slower downloads, especially during peak hours.
You can avoid this by using a reliable VPN for your FireStick. A good VPN offers several benefits:
Hides your streaming activities from your ISP, government, and other third parties.
Allows you to access geo-blocked content on platforms like Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Prime Video, Hulu, HBO, and more.
Blocks ads, malware, and trackers for a safer streaming and browsing experience.
All VPNs are almost the same, with not much difference between them, so we can’t recommend any specific one.
3-Check Internet Speed
If your internet speed is above 12Mbps, you should be able to stream 1080p content without issues. Your FireStick has a built-in tool to check your internet speed.
If you’re not getting the speed you want, you’ll need to troubleshoot your FireStick connection.
Check and improve your Wi-Fi Signal Strength .
1-Turn on your Fire TV and go to Settings. Press the right directional button on your remote (the right side of the ring) until the gear icon is highlighted.
Note: If you have an older Fire TV Stick or you have not updated it in a while, you can access Settings by clicking the up button (the top of the big circle) on your Fire TV remote. Then click the right button (the right side of the big circle) to highlight Settings. Finally, click the center of the circle to select Settings. The rest of the steps will be the same.
2-Next, select Network. Press the down button (the bottom of the large circle on your remote) to access the settings options.
3-Next, select your Wi-Fi network. It should already be selected in most cases. If not, use the up and down buttons to highlight your network.
4-press the Play button on the remote
5-Select run speed test
6-Then, select Continue and wait for the results. It may take a few minutes, depending on your Wi-Fi speed or other issues.
7-Finally, you’ll see your Wi-Fi speed under Network Download Speed. You’ll also see more details under Recommendations, which will show the maximum resolution you can stream and any issues with your Wi-Fi signal.
4-Use an Ethernet Cable for a Wired Connection :
A wired connection is usually faster than a wireless one. It doesn’t depend on how close the router is to the device, as the Ethernet cable plugs directly into your FireStick.
Also, there are no obstacles between the router and the device, unlike Wi-Fi, where electrical and other obstacles can weaken the signal.
Using a wired connection can help prevent buffering on your FireStick. To set it up, you can buy the Amazon Ethernet Adapter for Fire TV Devices from Amazon.
You’ll plug your internet/LAN wire and the power cable from your FireStick power adapter into the Ethernet adapter, then connect the adapter to your FireStick with a single cable.
Note: You don’t need to buy the Ethernet Adapter if your Wi-Fi connection already provides enough speed.
5-Clear up FireStick RAM :
Amazon FireStick devices have 1 GB to 2 GB of RAM. While this is enough for streaming, it’s not much, and it can fill up quickly.
Low RAM is a common cause of buffering on FireStick. Some apps use up RAM by running background processes, even when you’re not using them.
You can free up RAM by closing background apps. But how do you find out which ones are running? Uninstalling apps one by one can be tedious.
Fortunately, there’s a free app called Background Apps and Process List that helps you find and close background apps. You can download it from the Amazon Store.
Here’s how to download the Background Apps & Process List app and use it to close background apps (you can also use the Task Killer app):

This is the guide of how to install and use Task killer
6-Check and Update the FireStick OS :
An outdated FireStick OS can sometimes cause buffering issues. Although rare, it is possible. Typically, your FireStick will update automatically when a new OS version is available, but this doesn’t always happen.
If you’re experiencing buffering, it’s important to check that your FireStick OS is up to date. Follow these steps to check for and install updates:
1-Go to settings in your firestick from home screen
2-Select My Fire Tv
3- Click About
4-Click “Check for Updates” at the bottom of the screen to ensure your app is up to date.
5-Wait a few seconds. The screen will display whether an update is required or if your device is already up to date.
7-Prevent FireStick Overheating
Like any other device, your FireStick needs occasional rest. Overheating can lead to malfunctions, buffering, and streaming issues. To avoid these problems, it’s important to prevent overheating. Here’s a guide on how to address the FireStick heating issue.
While your FireStick can run for several hours without problems, it’s advisable to give it a break from time to time. Avoid leaving it on overnight, and unplug it when not in use.
If you suspect your FireStick has overheated, unplug it and let it cool for at least 30 minutes.
