For most UK households, the best IPTV device is a Fire TV Stick that still runs Fire OS (the 4K Plus or 4K Max at the time of writing) or a Google TV device such as the Google TV Streamer. Both are easy to use, plug into any telly with an HDMI port, and have a wide choice of player apps. If your TV is a recent Samsung, LG or Google TV model, try its built-in apps first, because you may not need to buy anything.

The rest of this guide compares every realistic option, with rough UK prices, and ends with a simple way to decide.

What makes a good IPTV device

An IPTV service gives you a login. The device's job is to run a player app that uses that login to show channels, films and a programme guide. So the things that matter are:

  • Choice of player apps. More choice means you can pick one that suits you, and you are not stuck if one app is withdrawn.
  • Ease of use. A simple remote and a clear home screen matter more than specifications for most families.
  • Speed. A quicker processor means channels open faster and the programme guide scrolls without lag.
  • Connection. Good Wi-Fi, or an Ethernet port for a cable to the router, makes the biggest difference to buffering.
  • Updates. A device that still gets software updates keeps working with new app versions.

The options at a glance

Prices move around a lot, especially on Amazon devices, which were discounted heavily in August 2026 just before list prices went up. Treat these as a rough guide at the time of writing and check the current price before you buy.

Fire TV Sticks: check which system it runs

Fire TV Sticks are the most popular choice in the UK for good reason. The remote is simple, the menus are clear, and they plug straight into the back of the telly.

The important thing in 2026 is that Amazon now makes two kinds. The Fire TV Stick 4K Plus and Fire TV Stick 4K Max run Fire OS, which is based on Android. They give you a wide choice of player apps, including ones installed from the developer's official website. The Fire TV Stick 4K Select and the newest Fire TV Stick HD run Vega OS, Amazon's new Linux-based system. Vega only accepts apps from the Amazon Appstore, and the choice of IPTV player apps there is limited.

Amazon has said all future Fire TV Sticks will run Vega. So a Fire OS stick is a good buy now, but its replacement in a few years probably will not be Fire OS. Our guide to Firestick Vega OS explains how to check your model and what to do if you already own a Vega stick.

Amazon raised its UK list prices in early September 2026. The 4K Plus was reported at £79.99 and the 4K Max at £99.99. Amazon discounts them often, though: in its August 2026 sale the 4K Plus was £36.99 and the 4K Max £47.99. If you are not in a hurry, wait for a sale.

Google TV Streamer and other Google TV devices

Google TV devices use the Google Play Store, which carries the main IPTV player apps directly, including TiviMate. There is no need to change any settings or install anything from a website. That makes Google TV the simplest long-term route for IPTV now that new Fire TV Sticks are moving to Vega.

The Google TV Streamer is Google's own device. It sits beside the telly rather than hanging off the back, has an Ethernet port, and cost £99 on Google's UK store at the time of writing. (Google raised the US price in August 2026, so the UK price may follow.)

Google stopped selling the older Chromecast with Google TV. If you already have one, it still works well for IPTV. If you see one for sale now, it is old stock or second-hand.

There are also cheaper Google TV boxes from mainstream brands. The Xiaomi TV Box S (3rd Gen), for example, runs Google TV and sold for roughly £55 to £95 at UK retailers when we checked. Make sure any box you buy says Google TV or Android TV with the Google Play Store, not just "Android".

If you go this way, our TiviMate setup guide walks through the most popular Google TV player app step by step.

Android TV boxes: Nvidia Shield

The Nvidia Shield TV Pro has been the enthusiast's choice for years. It is fast, has an Ethernet port and USB ports, handles large programme guides without a stutter and runs Android TV with the Google Play Store. The design dates from 2019, but it is still sold by UK retailers such as Currys and Scan, at around £190 when we checked.

It is excellent, but it is more than most households need. If you are the sort of person who enjoys setting things up, it is a great box. If you just want the telly to work, a stick or the Google TV Streamer does the job for much less.

MAG and Formuler boxes

These are dedicated set-top boxes designed with IPTV in mind.

MAG boxes, made by Infomir, feel like an old-style cable box. The current Linux models (the MAG540 and MAG544 ranges) do not use app stores in the usual way. Instead, you enter a portal address from your provider, and the provider links the box to your account using its MAC address (a code printed on the box and shown in its settings). Once set up, they are very simple: switch on, pick a channel. The downside is flexibility. You rely on your provider supporting MAG portals, and there is little else the box can do. Infomir also makes a Google TV model, the MAG555, which behaves like any other Google TV device. Prices vary by model and seller, so compare a few UK retailers.

Formuler boxes run Android and come with their own IPTV app, MyTVOnline, as well as access to other apps. The official UK Formuler store listed models from about £87 (Z10 SE) to £183 (Z12 Ultra) at the time of writing. They are well made, with Ethernet ports, but the menus take a little more learning than a Fire TV or Google TV.

Before buying either, ask your IPTV provider whether they support it. If you are with us, message the team first and we will tell you straight.

Apple TV 4K

If everyone in the house has an iPhone, the Apple TV 4K is lovely to use. It is quick, the remote is simple, and Apple supports its devices with updates for a long time. Apps only come from Apple's App Store, which has a reasonable choice of IPTV player apps, though fewer than Google Play.

The drawback is price. At the time of writing, Apple's UK store lists it at £199 for the Wi-Fi model with 64GB, and £249 for the model with an Ethernet port and 128GB. For IPTV alone, the Ethernet model is the better pick if your router is near the telly.

Your smart TV's own apps

Do not overlook the telly you already own. Recent Samsung, LG and Google TV sets usually have at least one decent IPTV player in their app store, so it costs nothing to try. Older TVs, Hisense sets on VIDAA and 2026 Philips models on Titan OS are harder, and a stick is usually the better answer there. Our guide to IPTV on a smart TV goes through each brand.

A plain warning about pre-loaded boxes

You will see boxes and sticks on marketplaces and social media sold "ready to go", with apps and channels already set up. Do not buy them.

They are usually cheap, unbranded or second-hand hardware with apps installed from unofficial sources. They rarely get updates, the apps often stop working within weeks, and when something goes wrong there is nobody to ring. Amazon has also confirmed it blocks apps known to be used for piracy on Fire TV devices, so a pre-loaded Firestick may simply stop doing what it was sold to do.

Buy a mainstream device from Amazon, Currys, Argos, Apple, Google or the manufacturer's official UK store. Install player apps only from the official app store on the device, or from the app developer's official website. Use services and content you are authorised to access, and read the terms.

How to choose: a simple guide for most households

If you are not technical and just want something that works, go through these questions in order.

  1. Is your TV less than about five years old and made by Samsung, LG, Sony or TCL? Try its own apps first during a free trial. If it works well, you do not need to buy anything.
  2. Do you use Amazon Prime and like Alexa? Get a Fire TV Stick 4K Plus or 4K Max, ideally in a sale. Check the box does not say 4K Select or HD.
  3. Would you rather not think about which Fire TV is which? Get the Google TV Streamer or another Google TV device. The player apps are in the Play Store and it is simple to use.
  4. Is everyone in the house on iPhone, and is budget not a worry? The Apple TV 4K is the most polished option.
  5. Is the Wi-Fi weak where the telly is? Choose a device with an Ethernet port (Google TV Streamer, Apple TV 4K with Ethernet, Nvidia Shield or Formuler) and run a cable to the router. Our guide to internet speed for IPTV explains why this helps.

For a second or third telly, the same device in every room makes life easier. Everyone learns one remote and one app.

Try it on your own device first

The best test of any device is your own telly, your own broadband and your own living room. BingeBear offers a free 24-hour trial with no card and no contract. Send a name and WhatsApp number from the free trial page and you get a login back to try on the device you already have, before you spend anything on new kit.

If you want more than one room covered, extra devices can be added to either plan. The details are on our pricing page. And whatever device you pick, the team will talk you through installing the app over WhatsApp.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best device for IPTV in the UK?

For most households, a Fire TV Stick that still runs Fire OS (the 4K Plus or 4K Max at the time of writing) or a Google TV device such as the Google TV Streamer. Both are easy to use, plug straight into the telly and have a wide choice of player apps. If you already own a recent Samsung, LG or Google TV set, try its own apps first.

Which Firestick is best for IPTV in 2026?

The Fire TV Stick 4K Plus or 4K Max, because they run Fire OS and give you the widest choice of player apps. Avoid the Fire TV Stick 4K Select and the newest Fire TV Stick HD for IPTV: both run Vega OS, which only allows apps from the Amazon Appstore. Check the model name carefully, not just the word newest.

Do I need an IPTV box, or will a stick do?

A stick is enough for most homes. Boxes such as the Nvidia Shield or Formuler range are more powerful and have an Ethernet port for a wired connection, which helps if your Wi-Fi is weak where the telly is. They cost more and suit people who like to tinker. For a straightforward living room setup, a good stick is fine.

Are pre-loaded IPTV boxes from marketplaces worth buying?

No. Boxes sold with apps and channels already set up are usually cheap hardware carrying apps from unofficial sources. They often stop working, get no updates and come with no one to call. Amazon has said it blocks apps known to be used for piracy on Fire TV. Buy a mainstream device from a proper retailer and install player apps from official stores.

Is Apple TV good for IPTV?

Yes, if you are already an iPhone household and do not mind the price. The Apple TV 4K is quick, very easy to use and gets long software support. Apps only come from Apple's App Store, which has a reasonable choice of IPTV players. At the time of writing it costs £199 or £249 from Apple's UK store, which is more than most sticks.

What about MAG boxes for IPTV?

MAG boxes by Infomir are simple set-top boxes that feel like a traditional cable box. Most models run a Linux system where the provider links the box to its service using the box's MAC address. They are easy once set up but less flexible than a stick. Check that your provider supports MAG before you buy one.
